SCIENTIA members conduct community outreach
Members of SCIENTIA from BSED Science participated in a community outreach program as part of their final practicum for the course Contemporary World. They are divided into three groups. The outreach program, which took place in Barangay 630, Sta. Mesa, Manila, focuses on teaching children how to lay a strong foundation for their future. The program included instruction on developing a relationship with God, strategies for pursuing dreams successfully, and the importance of proper hygiene. The event culminated with a book donation to the barangay hall and the establishment of a mini-library.

Human Genetic Research Seminar: The Role of Hormones in Sex Differences in the Brain and Behavior
by: AIRA MARIE B. COMETA, SCIENTIA
SCIENTIA members and officers attended a free lecture on "Human Genetic Research on the Influence of Hormones in Sex Differences in Brain and Behavior" on August 29, 2019 at the Mabini Building of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa Manila. The seminar was organized by Professor Gary Antonio C. Lirio of the Office of the Vice President for Research Extension and Development-Institute of Science and Technology Research (OVPRED-ISTR) Center for Life Sciences Research. Over 100 participants from the College of Education's BSED-Science PUP students, researchers, professors, and other students from various colleges and universities attended the event.
Dr. Matthew Bramble, an international guest speaker from the Department of Genetic Medicine at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., USA, presented and discussed his research findings on the effects of chromosomal sex and the influence of hormones on shaping sex differences in the brain and behavior. Dr. Bramble stressed throughout the lecture that the secretion of uterogonadal hormones such as testosterone plays a significant role in the aberrations and sex differences associated with sexual development in both sexes. He also discussed how hormone receptor mutations and hormones, specifically testosterone, affect the sexual development of both sexes physiologically and behaviorally. Dr. Bramble also discussed the effects of specific cases of disorder of sexual development (DSDs) such as complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and 5alpha-reductase deficiency syndrome on developmental outcomes that are sex chromosomally dependent. Animal models were used in the research. The findings of this study were based on previously published data on how hormones affect gene activation and neuron differentiation in the animal model used.
Dr. Bramble has published numerous studies, the majority of which focus on human genetics, EBOLA research, and diagnostic tools for the early detection of genetic mutations in children. The SCIENTIA members and officers, as well as other participants, gained knowledge about various cases of DSDs that could be the subject of future research. The lecture served as a vehicle for SCIENTIA members to acquire new authentic knowledge that they can share with others in their capacity as educators and paragons of knowledge.
